CWTA encourages Canadians to recycle old junk cellphones in time for Earth Day

Earth Day is tomorrow. The annual event is a constant reminder for us to be conscious of how we treat the planet. Much of the focus is on manufacturing and how companies — large or small — are minimizing their impact on the planet’s finite resources.

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association’s (CWTA) Recycle My Cell program is encouraging Canadians to recycle old technology and “reflect on some of the simple things they can do to help protect the environment for future generations.” Since 2005, the program has recycled 5,757,957 wireless devices, with 875,366 last year alone.

In addition to the CWTA’s program, several carriers and manufacturers, such as Apple and Samsung, have also instituted a recycling initiative that offer money for an old clunker.

Of course, if you decide to go the route of taking your old device out of the drawer, make sure you erase your phone, tablet, or wearable of all your personal information before recycling.
