Microsoft reportedly developing 2G/3G enabled Android dialer app designed for slower networks

Windows 10 Keynote

Despite displaying a renewed commitment to its own smartphone operating system by announcing Windows 10 mobile, Microsoft appears set to continue making software for competing platforms. According to various sources, the company plans to release a unique Android dialer app at some point in the near future.

The new application, appropriately dubbed Dialer, is reportedly being developed by the same team behind Microsoft’s video chat platform Skype, which the company purchased for $8.5-billion back in 2011. At first glance, the application looks very similar to most Android dialer apps, but upon further examination, it looks like it also enables calls over slower 2G/3G cellular networks, making it ideal for emerging markets.

With this app users will be able to make calls over slower 2G or 3G data networks, targeting areas of the world with slower wireless infrastructure. It’s unclear right now if the dialer app supports video calling capabilities, although some rumours indicate it likely will.

Microsoft is reportedly planning to release its upcoming dialer app in more regions at some point during the first half of 2016, but a public beta is expected at some point in the near future.

In the past, Microsoft has also released its suite of Office apps on both Android and iOS, as well as an Android launcher. The company’s dialer app is currently being tested in India.
