In an expansive interview with the Washington Post, Apple CEO Tim Cook opened up about a number of personal and professional subjects, from the importance of his public coming out to why he believes analysts are wrong that Apple has nowhere left to grow.
Perhaps most interesting for Apple product enthusiasts was his admissions about what he sees as core technologies of the future, namely AI and augmented reality.
In explaining why he believes mobile “is the greatest market on Earth from a consumer electronics point of view,” Cook states “Look at the core technologies that make up the smartphone today and look at the ones that will be dominant in smartphones of the future — like AI. AI will make this product even more essential to you. It will become even a better assistant than it is today.”
When it comes to privacy concerns, the famously private Cook doesn’t believe AI will pose much of an issue.
“I think that talented people can come up with fantastic ways of using AI without violating privacy.”
Cooke also compared the mobile market against the PC market, saying: “The global sales of PCs each year are about 275 million right now. That number’s been declining. The global market for smartphones is 1.4 billion. Over time, I’m convinced every person in the world will have a smartphone.”
As for augmented reality, Cook says “I think AR is extremely interesting and sort of a core technology. So, yes, it’s something we’re doing a lot of things on behind that curtain that we talked about.”
Unfortunately, readers keen to hear about Apple’s most buzz-worthy secret project of late — its alleged attempt at creating a self-driving electric car — are out of luck as Cook declined to comment on the so-called ‘Project Titan.’
