GoPro launches Hero 5 Black, Hero 5 Session and Karma drone

GoPro launched the Hero 5 Black camera today, its first flagship release in nearly two years.

The Hero 5 Black is capable of shooting 4K video and is waterproof up to 10 meters (33 feet) right out of the box, without any need for a waterproof housing. Due to the lack of housing and the addition of three microphones, GoPro states the Hero 5 Black will record audio that is on par with its video quality.

The Hero 5 Black also features electronic image stabilization (EIS), responds to voice controls in seven languages and has a two-inch touchscreen and built-in GPS.

The device is priced at $399 in the U.S., while no Canadian pricing has yet been revealed.

At the same time, GoPro dropped the smaller and less-expensive Hero 5 Session camera for $299 USD. It also features 4K shooting, EIS and voice controls, but lacks the touchscreen, GPS and microphone setup.

Finally, there was the launch of GoPro’s first quadcopter drone, Karma, which was initially billed as the headliner of the event. The drone is foldable and has a clamshell controller with a touchscreen. In addition, it comes with a removable stabilizer that can be mounted on a bike, helmet or car. It is $799 USD alone, $999 with a Hero 5 Session and $1,099 with a Hero 5 Black.

Both cameras are set to be available starting October 2nd, while the drone will go on sale October 23rd.

If that wasn’t enough, the company also announced GoPro Plus, a cloud storage service in which users pay a $4.99 USD per month fee to have all photos and videos they take uploaded straight to the cloud. The files can then be accessed through its mobile apps Splice and Capture, or through its web and mobile app Quik.

The subscription, which will be available starting January 2017, includes a library of royalty-free music to use when editing, but it does not allow users to switch back and forth on devices seamlessly.

Will these new additions be enough to bolster GoPro’s declining sales? Only time will tell.
