In a push to gain more of the security software market, BlackBerry announced today that it is partnering with Zimperium, a U.S. and Israeli-based mobile security startup, to resell the latter’s anti-hacking zIPS app.
The Canadian tech company will integrate the app into its own services — Good Dynamics Secure Mobility Platform and BES12 — and offer it to its enterprise and business customers. The service, Zimperium told The Globe and Mail, will cost $10 a month per device, and BlackBerry will take an undisclosed cut of those sales.
Last year, Zimperium discovered ‘Stagefright,’ a major group of bugs that affected Android phones from version 2.2 onward. Stagefright gave hackers the ability to execute malicious code through MMS messages using only a victim’s phone number. The bugs caused Google to begin releasing monthly security patches for its operating system, beginning August 2015.
zIPS protects against a variety of device, network and application attacks such as OS/kernel exploitation or attempts to intercept SSL-encrypted traffic. Somewhat ironically, it will only be available for iOS and Android, and not for BlackBerry’s operating system.
