The S8’s facial recognition feature can be bypassed with a photo

Samsung Galaxy S8

If you plan to pick up the Galaxy S8 when it goes on sale in Canada on April 29th, you may not set up the phone’s facial recognition feature.

A Periscope video, seen below, spotted by iDeviceHelp shows that the S8’s biometric authentication feature, in its current iteration, can easily be bypassed with a photo of the user’s face. In the case below, the person filming the video registered their face on one S8 and then used another S8 to take a picture of their face and unlock the original device.

The fact that facial recognition isn’t secure shouldn’t be surprising. After all, it’s still a nascent technology. Moreover, the S8 isn’t even out yet. Samsung has time to polish the feature before launch.
