Today Nokia announced an intent to purchase Oslo-based mobile software provider Trolltech – the make the Linux powered Qtopia platform as well as the Qt product that is used in products such as Google Earth and the Opera web browser. The cost is estimated to be around $155 million.
Nokia says that the acquisition will allow Nokia and its developer community to better create applications that work on the Internet, Nokia’s phones, and on personal computers.
Nokia hopes the Trolltech acquisition will enhance its own cross-platform software strategy and help them to work between mobile devices and PCs. Trolltech will continue their operations in Oslo, and Nokia will work with it to expand the software as part of their Internet Services department.
