Awesome Android: ClockworkMod Tether brings free, no-root Android tethering

One of the most innovative and generous Android developers over the last couple years has been Koushik Dutta, aka Koush, who has brought us ClockwordMod and many other important root Android tweaks. But today he has something everyone can enjoy.

ClockworkMod Tether Alpha allows a user to tether his or her phone’s internet connection, through USB, to the computer without it being detected by the carrier. It does this by creating a proxy between the computer and the phone, interfacing an app that one must download on both devices. In fact, the app is so clean that when you install it on your PC, it will automatically connect to and push the .APK to your phone. It is available for Windows, OS X and various Linux builds, so compatibility is high.

Why is this app important? Because many users are not allowed to tether if they have less than a 1GB data plan. For the many millions of Canadians who only have 500MB plans and need to connect to the internet in a pinch when there is no WiFi, this could be a lifesaver.

Check out the instructions at Koush’s Google+ page. Apparently there are still some bugs to sort out, but because this is an alpha he will be updating it regularly.
