Melbourne University creates “Gi-Fi” chip 5Mbps

Melbourne University researchers created the GiFi chip that is only five millimeters, uses 60GHz frequencies with a range of 10 meters – same as Bluetooth, one-millimeter-wide antenna that consumes less than two watts of power, and will cost less than $10 to manufacture. This new personal-area networking chip can transmit data through the air at 5Gbps. Researchers say the chip will be available for consumer electronics – including mobile phones – in about one year.
