Hockey is a deep part of our Canadian culture. Personally, when it comes the NHL, I’m a long time Oilers fan and next year is the year they take home the cup. However, I digress. The NHL has teamed up with PrePlay, “the world’s leading predictive game studio,” and released an iPad app called NHL PrePlay.
The premise of the app is cool, but comes with a heavy dose of advertising as it’s co-sponsored by Molson Canadian. NHL PrePlay is free to download, but states “You must be at least 17 years old to download this application. Frequent/Intense Alcohol, Tobacco, or Drug Use or References.”
Here’s the deal. NHL PrePlay is a first-of-its-kind app that allows you to participate in the Stanley Cup Playoffs by making live, in-game predictions just like the broadcasters. You’ll be given a quick chance, via your iPad, to make predictions on various plays, such as who’ll win a face-off, power play, kill a penalty or win the game. As the game progresses you’ll be given points and awards based on your predictions. In addition, there’s a social aspect to the app where you can invite and challenge friends, but lacks the ability to share via Twitter or Facebook.
Update: We reached out to the NHL to see if this app will be heading towards other platforms, such as Android, BlackBerry or Windows Phone. Kerry McGovern, NHL Senior Manager Communications, stated that “we’ll have it for the Android next season… iPad available now.. iPhone to come during this playoffs.”
