Google’s Nexus 7 tablet will take on the Kindle Fire, says ASUS exec

The Google Nexus 7 tablet is no secret. This is rumoured to be made by ASUS and has leaked online in pictures, but not yet in video form. Today we’ll probably see Google officially unveil OS 4.1 Jelly Bean and also showcase their first Nexus branded tablet. It’s also rumoured that it’ll be Wi-Fi-only, have a 7-inch display (1280 × 800), 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 1.2MP front-facing camera, 1GB of RAM, 9-hours battery life, and come in two models: an 8GB version for $199 (USD) and the 16GB for $249 (USD).

With these price points and specs it’ll certainly be a desired tablet. According to a report in Reuters an ASUS executive stated the Nexus 7 is “targeting Amazon. The Kindle is based on Google’s platform but with its own service, so Google has to launch its own service, too,” A previous rumours that didn’t get much attention was that the Nexus tablet will come with “subscriptions from some major magazine publishers.” This might come true today.

Of course, everything is a rumour until something official. But all signs are pointing towards Google launching a spec-heavy, affordable, Jelly Bean running tablet today – hopefully us Canadians will get to taste it.
