New Expedia app launches for Android and iOS, built on popular FlightTrack technology

Expedia, like many other web-based startups, tethered its future to mobile last year when it purchased popular app developer Mobiata. Famous for its best-selling FlightTrack suite of apps for iOS and Android, the company has been quietly building Expedia’s next wave of mobile apps.

Today, Expedia 2.0 launches, supporting both hotels and flights. While mobile flight booking has yet to be enabled internationally, Canadian users can purchase same-day hotel rooms and find deals for upcoming hotel stays using the revamped interface.

Like the competition such as Hotel Tonight, Hipmunk, Booking.com, Priceline.com, Orbitz and others, Expedia’s new app is picture-heavy, focusing on only the necessary features to quickly book a hotel with as few taps as possible.

We searched for deals in Toronto, New York and San Francisco and found a number of excellent prices for brand name hotels that weren’t available in other apps. The apps’s usefulness will increase exponentially when it enables flight search and bookings for Canadians, but until then give it a try and let us know what you think.
