Sony reveals the ‘first raft’ of devices to receive Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade

The release of Android 4.4 KitKat immediately prompted questions from Android users about device upgrades. Some manufacturers have already confirmed their current flagships will see KitKat — HTC promised the One would be updated within 90 days, and Motorola will update the Moto X — and now Sony has come forth with a plan.

According to the company’s blog, Sony will eventually bring KitKat to the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1, which covers the “first raft” of devices. That’s the good news. The massive asterisk (*) states that “Software rollouts are a phased process – timings & availability may vary by market / carrier.” Unfortunately, there’s no word on when the upgrades will begin.

In the meantime, Sony has also confirmed the following devices will see an upgrade to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean beginning next month. These include the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1. Of course, it’s up to the carriers to certify and roll out the updates, so it may be many more months until they’re actually in customers’ hands. Some devices, like the Xperia Z and Xperia SP, are still running Android 4.1, and will jump straight to Android 4.3.
