Korean giant, Samsung, announced today the introduction of 8Gb (gigabits) LPDDR4 mobile RAM for smartphones and tablets. Not only is this the first mention of LPDDR4 (“LP” stands for “low power”) meant for mobile devices, but Samsung is promising to combine four of the chips on a single die for the eventual total of 4GB (gigabytes).
While this number butts up against the theoretical addressable limit of current 32-bit chips, the company is expected to introduce a 64-bit Exynos chip early next year, with Qualcomm following suit in the months beyond. The DDR4 chips also improve data transfer speeds to 3200Mbps, a third faster than Samsung’s LPDDR3 chips found in the Galaxy S4 and Note 3, with 40% lower energy expenditure at 1.1V.
The chips are sampling in early 2014, and may come to market in time for the Galaxy S5, though it’s more likely to be adopted for the larger, faster Galaxy Note 4 later in the year.
