Fitbit update taps iPhone 5s M7 chip for basic step counting

Fitbit is opening its iOS app to users who don’t own one of its wearable trackers by taking advantage of the M7 chip in the iPhone 5s.

The company rolled out version 2.1 of its iPhone app today, adding a feature called MobileTrack. By utilizing the basic step, distance and calorie tracking parsed from the phone itself, iPhone 5s users can be a part of the Fitbit community without a One, Flex or Force tracker. Though the feature is identical to many others in the App Store — Pedometer++ and Steps are two free alternatives — the integration with Fitbit allows users to get a taste for the real thing in an accessible and user-friendly interface.

Version 2.1 also sports redesigned sections for silent alarms, profiles, tracker settings and sign-up/sign-in.

The app was recently updated to version 2.0, bringing an iOS 7-friendly interface and a number of new features.
