Apple has presented Donald Trump with a glass and gold trophy as the tech company continues to try to accommodate the president’s demand for U.S.-made iPhones.
On August 6, Apple announced plans to move all of its iPhone and Apple Watch glass screen production to a Corning factory in Kentucky. Alongside that, it also shared plans to work with Samsung’s U.S.-based chip fabrication plant to make chips in a new way that hasn’t been seen before, according to Apple. The company’s press release outlines several other U.S.-centric plans as well.

Out of all of that, the cherry on top is that to celebrate this, Apple has given the president a gold trophy, which is just kind of hilarious. However, to me, the saddest part is that it probably worked. I bet Trump went home and was overjoyed to have a new gold trophy to look at.
The trophy/plaque/statuette is a large glass disk with an Apple logo in the centre. Along the top, it says, “President Donald J. Trump—Apple American Manufacturing Program.” Along the bottom, it says made in USA 2025 and has Tim Cook’s signature.
A report on The Verge says that the glass is from the Corning factory in the U.S. and the gold base came from Utah. It also highlights that the glass was designed by a former US Marine Corp corporal that now works at Apple.
Overall, it’s just kind of sad to see companies pander to Trump over all of this. Plus, the U.S. is still placing tariffs around the globe that are bound to make tech and tons of other products more expensive for regular people, likely even us here in Canada. We’ll see what happens when the iPhone 17 series launches later this year and it it costs more because of Trump.
