When U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canada, the provinces fought back in several ways. The Ontario government hit Trump’s one-time best buddy, Elon Musk, and his Starlink internet service by cancelling a contract to connect 15,000 residents.
Global News now reports that the Ford government negotiated a break fee to cancel Starlink’s $100 million contract.
A spokesperson for the provincial government confirmed to Global News the deal has ended. “Our government has cancelled the Starlink contract,” they wrote in an email. “We are seeking an alternate solution as we continue our efforts to secure long term, stable high-speed internet access across the province.”
To end the deal, the province had to pay a fee, but it’s unclear how much the country had to pay. A government source told Global News on background that the negotiations with SpaceX to settle the fee had gone well, but left Ontario on the hook. But it was a lot less than the original $100 million deal.
The Ford government unveiled the agreement with SpaceX all the way back in November 2024.
