Bell has completed deployment of a subsea fibre optic cable to the Fogo Island and Change Islands in Newfoundland.
With this 16-plus km network, the two outport communities will benefit from high-speed broadband. The project was funded in partnership with the Government of Canada under the Universal Broadband Fund (UBF). As Bell notes, this improved infrastructure will prove especially useful as Fogo Island and Change Islands are an emerging international tourism destination known for sustainable development and community-owned hospitality.
It should be noted, however, that there’s still some work to be done. Bell notes that it aims to have the necessary distribution infrastructure operational by late fall 2025, with plans to start offering service to customers shortly thereafter.
