An interview by DNA India quoted Sunil Lalvani, Managing Direction of BlackBerry India, saying that “There will be support for all BB 7 devices till December 2015… then we will discontinue sales of older BB devices, and provide exchange offers and upgrade offers for existing BB 7 users, to move to BB 10 platform.”
This sounds like a good move, as BlackBerry’s BB10 OS is where the company is betting its future. However, it’s untrue. The Waterloo-based company BlackBerry has issued a statement dousing the idea and declared that “[We] intend to support the BlackBerry operating system indefinitely. Any comments to the contrary are not correct.”
BlackBerry recently reported Q4 results and revealed that BlackBerry smartphones running OS 7 are recording larger sales that the new BlackBerry 10 devices. This is largely due to low-cost pricing in emerging markets. BlackBerry stated that 3.2 million BlackBerry 7 devices were sold last quarter, compared to only 1.1 million BlackBerry 10 smartphones.
