BlackBerry will be losing one its board members in the coming weeks. Bert Nordberg, the long-time telecom executive and ex-Sony Ericsson CEO, has decided to depart BlackBerry’s board. According to an SEC filing, Nordberg will not seek re-election at the annual general meeting next month.
Nordberg was appointed a board seat back in February 2013 to help with the “exploration of strategic alternatives” and potentially find a buyer for the Waterloo-based company. After BlackBerry decided to keep pushing ahead in the mobile market, mainly by shifing the exec team around and bringing in new CEO John Chen, Nordberg stated “I think BlackBerry is able to survive as a niche company. But being a niche company means deciding to be a niche company. Historically, BlackBerry has had larger ambitions. But battling giants like Apple, Google and Samsung is tough.” Looks like BlackBerry did put its focus on the enterprise market.
With Nordberg out, this will leave John Chen, Prem Watsa, Barbara Stymiest, Timothy Dattels, Claudia Kotchka and Richard Lynch as its Board of Directors.
