TELUS is set to release the Alcatel OneTouchIdol X+ this August along with the Pop 8, an entry-level 8-inch tablet.
The company announced plans to release its first AOT smartphone this week, as the Chinese OEM attempts to make further inroads into the Canadian market with premium-looking devices at costs that significantly undercut similar choices from Samsung, LG and others.
The Idol X+ is the successor to the Idol X, which Bell released (and we reviewed) earlier this year. It isn’t a huge upgrade — the battery is slightly larger at 2,500mAh and the CPU has been updated to a faster, slightly less outdated Cortex-A7 chip — but it’s worthy of consideration for the price.

The Idol X+ sports a 5-inch 1080p display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 13MP rear camera, Android 4.4.2 and the aforementioned specs above. It also lacks LTE, which is interesting since the Idol 2S, which Bell is using to replace the Idol X, does have it.
As for the Pop 8, it’s a very entry-level 8-inch tablet with a 1280×800 pixel screen, a 1.3Ghz quad-core Cortex-A7 chip, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, a 2MP rear camera, VGA front camera, a 4,100mAh battery, and will launch with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It will presumably come with HSPA+ support as well.
We don’t have pricing yet for either of these models, but you can expect the Idol X+ to be free on a 2-year contract and around $300 outright, while the Pop 8 will likely stick below the $200 mark.
