SyrupCast Episode 6: Angel’s in the details

In this week’s SyrupCast, we contemplate the future of wireless in Canada. And what is wireless exactly? Less and less of our content is taking up by what we’d refer to as “traditional” mobile products. Instead, we fill the proverbial pages of our days with wearables like Thalmic’s Myo gesture band, Oculus Rift’s new virtual reality headset, Samsung’s myriad smartwatches, and other gadgets that pair with our smartphones.

And yet as we get further away from core mobile, we always end up back at the beginning: the smartphone really is the centre of our digital world, and increasingly at the expense of other products. In our Tête-à-Tête this week, Douglas and I talk about whether affordable phablets are going to be the death of the tablet as a category, or whether the two will merely morph into a single type of product. So, in our podcast this week, we talk about just that, the affordable phablet, and how companies like Alcatel OneTouch, Huawei, Oppo, OnePlus and others are meting swift blows on the traditional subsidized smartphone business model.

And from there we talk about mobile plan pricing, because we’ve been dancing around the subject for weeks.
