The iPad Air 2 has three CPU cores and 2GB RAM

Primate Labs, the creators of the cross-platform Geekbench benchmark app, has determined that the iPad Air 2 is the first iOS device with three CPU cores and 2GB of RAM.

The tablet, which was announced last week, was advertised as having an upgraded A8X chip, but the company only gave performance metrics in relation to its other chips, not in absolute terms. Now we know that the iPad Air 2 has three A8 CPU cores clocked at 1.5Ghz each, along with 2GB of RAM.

This puts it well ahead of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in head-to-head performance, and well ahead of the fastest Android device on the list, the quad-core Tegra K1-powered NVIDIA Shield Tablet, which scored 1080 single-core and 3205 multi-core.Screenshot 2014-10-21 16.15.58 Screenshot 2014-10-21 16.16.07It’s unclear for what specific purpose the iPad Air 2 has an extra CPU core, since the “X” version of previous iPads focused on extra GPU speed — which the A8X offers as well — but it’s clear the company has something productivity focused for its new iPads. Perhaps an iPad Pro?
