WhatsApp has been talking about adding calling functionality for months. Various technical difficulties held up this feature’s release but CEO Jan Koum promised it was coming early 2015. Today brings good news in that respect, as Android Police reports that the feature is now live and available to all. Sort of.
WhatsApp has yet to make a formal announcement, but word on the street is that the call functionality has been activated and will be available to any user that receives a call from another call-enabled user. So, sort of like an invite system, but there’s no limit to how many people you can bless with WhatsApp calling abilities once you yourself have received a call.
You can grab the latest version of WhatsApp via the company’s website. You’ll need to enable app installs from third parties to do so (if you’ve never sideloaded an Android APK, check out our quick how-to). Once you grab the APK direct from WhatsApp, you’ll be running 2.11.531. Then you just need to sit by the phone and wait for it to ring, which is my favourite thing to do on a Friday night.
