The release of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge did not help Samsung in Q2. The company announced its quarterly yesterday, and all its business units recorded profits of $5.9 billion USD (KRW 6.9 trillion) on revenues of $41 billion USD (KRW 48.54 trillion).
According to its release, operating profits within its mobile division marginally increased in the quarter to $2.36 billion (KRW 2.76 trillion) with revenues of $22 billion (KRW 26.06 trillion), but “despite the launch of Galaxy S6, improvement to earnings was quite marginal due to low smartphone shipments and an increase in marketing expenses for new product launches.”
Samsung didn’t state how many smartphones it shipped in the quarter, nor how its newest flagships are fairing in the market. In addition, Samsung says its strategy to improve revenues is to “flexibly adjusting the price” of both the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.
The company also noted that tablet shipments dipped once again, which was caused by the “extended off-season in the market.” Samsung intends to remedy this with its new Galaxy Tab A series and another “new product scheduled for later this year.”
Finally, Samsung hinted that it will be “launching a new model with a larger screen.” This could be the heavily leaked Galaxy Note 5 or Galaxy S6 edge+, both of which are expected to be unveiled on August 13th. Samsung also noted the supply issues that plagued the Galaxy S6 edge have been addressed, which is a good indication that the another curved smartphone is en route.
