Rogers announced this week that it has turned on gigabit internet in select neighbourhoods across Toronto and the GTA, offering speeds of 1 gigabits per second (1000 megabits) in the downstream and 50 megabits per second in the upstream, for $149.99 per month.
The company, which offers internet in Southern and Eastern Ontario, New Brunswick and Newfoundland-Labrador, announced gigabit home internet earlier this year, pushing it out over the new DOCSIS 3.1 standard that, according to the company, has much lower overhead than Bell’s equivalent fibre-to-the-home offering.
Rogers says that the $149.99 monthly price includes a new Rocket Gigabit WiFi modem, and has no download limits.
Mirroring that internet announcement was the explanation of Rogers’ first 4K television broadcast. The company says that 4K-capable set-top boxes are available to rent now for existing clients at a monthly cost of $12.95 per month. All 4K content will air on a single channel, channel 999, at least in the short term, but as availability grows Rogers will bring it to other channels like it did with HD several years ago. The first 4K broadcast will be an NHL game, when the Toronto Maple Leafs play the Montreal Canadiens on January 23rd.
Rogers announced in October that its 4K content will include every 2016 Blue Jays home game, along with 20 “marquee” NHL games and UHD shows from Netflix and Shomi.
