BlackBerry released BBM, it’s popular messaging service, on iOS and Android devices almost two years ago. Since then, millions of people have downloaded the app.
Starting today, Android users can not only use BBM to send text messages, images and stickers, they can also use the platform to video chat as well. According to the company, this has been one of the most requested features from users. BBM Video is now rolling out to Android users and is set to come to iOS soon.
BBM Video, which is similar to FaceTime on iOS or video calling on Skype, gives BBM users the option to make audio and video calls over 4G and Wi-Fi networks. BBM Video on Android requires a device running 4.4 (KitKat) or higher. When the app arrives on iPhones and iPads, it will require iOS 8 or higher.
“We’re initially limiting availability because this is the first time we’re launching BBM Video calling, and we want to monitor performance, gather feedback, and iron out any kinks that may arise before we roll it out globally,” said Matthew Talbot, SVP of emerging solutions at BlackBerry. “The beta video feature will only be available in U.S. and Canada, coming first to Android users, followed closely by iOS.”
