Apple debuted a new version of Maps today, and has also announced its navigation platform is now open to developers. These features will launch when iOS 10 is publicly released this Fall, though they’re available to all developers today.
This means that users will now be able to perform tasks such as booking a table at a restaurant through Open Table, or request a ride through Uber.
The look of Apple Maps has also been tweaked, giving users the ability to view traffic located on their route as well as a new dynamic view that adjusts depending on local driving conditions. In a city area, Maps now zooms in to display street detail, and also zooms out when driving on an extended straightaway, giving the driver a better view of the road ahead. Quick controls have been added as well to give users the ability to easily add or remove map detail.
During Apple’s WWDC 2016 keynote presentation today Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice-president of software services, showed attendees and viewers at home, how users can now search for a restaurant, book a reservation, request a car and even pay for a car, all within Apple Maps thanks to the platform’s new extension functionality.
