Explore art and colour with Google’s ‘Pocket Gallery’

Google Arts and Culture

After showcasing the works of Vermeer in augmented reality in 2018, Google is now providing an opportunity for everyone to appreciate “The Art of Color” in their “Pocket Gallery,” available on the Google Arts & Culture app.

The Mountain View, California-based search giant says their new AR art collection is inspired by abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky, who said that “colour is a power which directly influences the soul.”

The latest collection of “Pocket Gallery” features a variety of artist’s work that is divided according to their colour palette.

Upon selecting the new series in the Arts & Culture app, a virtual gallery will be generated through the smartphone onto the nearby ground. “The Art of Color” allows us to explore four rooms of paintings that represent a unique color palette. For example, we might come across a dark room that symbolizes The Night Watch by Rembrandt.

The virtual gallery also contains a series of interactive geometric shapes and vibrant colours that complements the paintings. All of the included art pieces are selected using Google’s Art Palette tool, which correlates different artworks based on their colours. These artworks came from 33 partner institutions across four continents.

Google hopes to find new and unexpected ways to bring people closer to art. The company also wants to bring arts of different genre and generation together and celebrate human heritage through technology.
