Sony rounds out Xperia Z3 family with Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet

The most surprising thing about Sony’s event today was probably the debut of its first Android Wear smartwatch, the SmartWatch 3, and the launch of a new fitness band, the SmartBand Talk.Leaks over the last few weeks meant the launch of a three new smartphones and a new tablet weren’t all that surprising.

We do now have the official specs on these devices tough, which is more than we had yesterday, especially for the Z3 Compact Tablet, the least leaked of the four. As is obvious from the name, this 8-inch tablet is part of Sony’s flagship Z3 line, though we’re not really sure where the ‘Compact’ branding comes in (perhaps because it’s an 8-inch device as opposed to 10-inch?).

Either way, you’re looking at the same Snapdragon 801 chipset that’s powering the Z3 and Z3 Compact, which boasts a 2.5 GHz quad-core Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 330 graphics. The Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet boasts an 8-inch Full HD display, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, up to 128 GB storage expansion via MicroSD, an 8.1MP camera in the back, a 2.2MP front facing camera, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac,  and a 4500 mAh battery. The whole thing runs on Android 4.4.2.

Sony is really pushing the Z3 Compact Tablet’s compatibility with PS4 Remote Play, because it’s the first tablet to support the technology. With Remote Play, users can use their Xperia tablet as a remote screen and connect and control games on your PS4.

There will be both WiFi and LTE models, and Sony is anticipating a fall launch, though we don’t have any idea on price just yet.
