James Moore, Canada’s Industry Minister, sent out a press release late Friday that an announcement will be made this morning at 9:30 that will “support more consumer choice and better service in the wireless market.”
The details were vague, but a report in the Globe and Mail suggest the government is set to unveil a mini auction for prime spectrum that’s specifically reserved for newer wireless players, such as Wind Mobile, Mobilicity and Quebec-based Videotron. What is reportedly called the “AWS-3 auction,” the Globe notes that it’ll take place before the 2,500 MHz auction in April 2015 and is that “The federal government’s end game is to create a situation where struggling smaller players Wind Mobile and Mobilicity merge and the spectrum they hold gets rolled along with other spectrum into a vehicle that’s sufficiently well-capitalized to succeed in the market.”
