Rogers New Year’s Eve prediction: 6,000 texts per second at midnight

New Year’s has always seen a spike in texts and phone calls. Rogers says their network traffic will double at midnight, thus predicting that customers will send about 6,000 texts per second, up from 3,100 texts on a “normal” day. A recent survey by Rogers revealed that 33% of Canadians will place a phone call within the first few minutes of the ball dropping. In addition, 18% will take to Twitter or Facebook, 17% will send a text or picture message, 11% will send an email, and 3% will use IM. Finally, 16% will wait to be face-to-face to say Happy New Year – there was no indication on the survey if it was a physical meeting or possibly a Skype call.
