The history behind the LG 3G Watch Phone

Remember the little device that made a big impact during this years CES? Yes, the LG-GD910 3G Watch Phone. This little gem has got worldwide attention for its design. Recently, European mobile carrier Orange decided to sell this later this year… so this product has legs and seems like the timing is right.

Forbes wrote a great piece on the history of the LG-GD910 3G Watch Phone… which took 3 years to make and designers started to mold the idea in 2006, but later to put the idea on hold as consumers were not ready for it. LG VP of mobile communications design research lab, Kangheui Cha said “The feedback was, basically, ‘I don’t think we’re ready yet”. It was not until 2007 that the designers went full force says Cha “That time, the available technology and design trends were in harmony”.

The phone’s main designer, Kim Hyun Chul says he did an “enormous” amount of research and the greatest challenge was managing the phone’s weight. “LG wanted the Watch Phone to meet four difficult criteria: to be small, yet powerful; to be easy to use, despite its miniature screen and lack of a keypad; to be comfortable to wear; and to have a long-lasting battery. Designers also wanted the phone to look sophisticated enough that people would wear it every day, even to formal events.

A series of meetings with LG’s engineers produced the final solution: a full touchscreen, a Flash interface and voice recognition features that allow the user to make calls and access contacts without much fumbling. A text-to-speech program helps out by reading messages out loud. Upping the futuristic factor, video calls (using a built-in camera) are also possible over fast “3G” networks.”
