Facebook now connects 250 million people worldwide… new iPhone app coming soon

facebook-3.0Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, said on their company blog “So today as we celebrate our 250 millionth user, we are also continuing to develop Facebook to serve as many people in the world in the most effective way possible. This means reaching out to everyone across the world and making products that serve all of you, wherever you are – whether through Facebook Connect, new mobile products and the other things that we are building”.

One of the new mobile products that will be rolled out is a new iPhone App. Joe Hewitt is an engineer at Facebook and the developer of the Facebook iPhone app. In one of his Tweets back on June 8th he states that “I am still putting the finishing touches on the Facebook iPhone app”, then further says “It will be at least a week before it is ready to submit, and then perhaps weeks more for Apple to approve.”

According to his personal website, Joe Hewitt sounds like a solid guy and loves developing. He has codenamed the new Facebook iPhone app “The Three20 Project” after the iPhone’s 320-pixel-wide screen.

In addition, referring to the speed of the new iPhone and how it creates a better user experience he states “I was thrilled by the speed of the 3G S, but the real moment came when I installed the new Facebook app (still in development) onto the device. I am, of course, acutely aware of every speed bump in the app — every table that didn’t scroll fluidly enough, every animation that dropped frames, and every place the app would freeze while loading images. On the iPhone 3G S, every single one of these pain points are healed. Fast, smooth, and perfect every time. I have yet to see the app freeze once. I have yet to see a table that showed any hesitation to scroll. I have yet to see a single frame dropped. If my apps ever give my users any friction ever again, I will have no one to blame but myself. Apple has done their job masterfully and the iPhone 3G S now has every right to call itself a computer”.

Since Canadians are one of countries that use Facebook the most, here are some of the new features you can expect to see for the upcoming Facebook app for iPhone 3.0:
