Quebec to implement full cellphone ban while driving? “Your attention is not on the road. It is on the conversation”

Ontario bans with cellphone use while drivingQuebec currently has a ban on the use of cellphones while driving, a law that’s been in effect for 2-years now. More provinces are going in this direction as it provides a safer environment while driving, but it seems like Quebec might be going a full step forward.

They are considering implementing a full ban of hand-held cellphones and hands-free cellphones. Jean-Marie De Koninck, president of the Quebec Road Safety Task Force states “Your attention is not on the road. It is on the conversation”. He is taking this distraction issue straight to Transport Minister Julie Boulet this fall before it causes more injuries, accidents or deaths.

De Koninck also states that there are no firm Canadian stats on the number of accidents caused by cellphone use, but for some reason he quoted numbers in France. They show 7.5% of fatal road accidents are linked to people using cellphones while driving.

Even early on this is getting some resistance. De Koninck says “[They] say, ‘How are we going to apply that law? How are we going to tell that someone is actually using the cellphone, or singing? The least we could do is an awareness campaign. In the United States in some areas, some categories cannot use [cellphones at the wheel] — for instance, young drivers.”
