SaskTel selects Nokia Siemens Networks to help build new network

SaskTel recently announced they have signed a wireless network sharing agreement with Bell and TELUS for the “rapid deployment of next generation wireless and data services through UMTS and HSPA technologies”. This is to start mid-2010 and has a targeted completion date of 2011 and ensures 98% of Saskatchewan residents will have access to the UMTS/HSPA network.

Sounds good so far. Today they have brought on the reliable Nokia Siemens Networks to help them build out their network. Robert Watson, president and chief executive officer at SaskTel said “After a comprehensive review, SaskTel has selected Nokia Siemens Networks because of the company’s advanced solutions and their global carrier presence and reputation”.

In the release today it stated that “SaskTel will use a core network solution, including mobile softswitching, packet core with “direct tunnel” functionality, and harmonized subscriber management systems. The upgraded systems will complement SaskTel’s existing 3G network solutions and future-proof the carrier for a smooth transition to fourth generation technology based on the emerging, global Long-term Evolution (LTE) standard.”
