Rogers says decrease in Q1 subscribers due to 2010 Vancouver Olympics

Rogers has reported their Q1 2010 results and quickly looking over the numbers it seems a trend has come into effect. A trend in the wrong direct as they have decreased the number of activations in both Postpaid and Prepaid.

Postpaid net subscriber additions was 47,000 in Q1 compared to 104,000 last year (a drop of 57,000). Rogers does state that “The year-over-year decrease in net subscriber additions for the quarter primarily reflects cautious sales and marketing spending in the current year period due to significantly intensified advertising and promotional activity associated with a 2010 Vancouver Olympic sponsorship by a main competitor”

In addition, the report states that wireless data revenue increased by approximately 40% to $415 million and represented approximately 26% of total network revenue (compared to 20% from Q1-2009). One more note from the report shows that “Wireless activated and upgraded approximately 348,000 smartphone devices, predominately iPhone, BlackBerry and Android devices, of which approximately 35% were for subscribers new to Wireless”
