Android 2.2 “Froyo” officially announced

At Google I/O today they announced the 7th updated to their Android OS – 2.2 “Froyo”. Some of the major upgrades from this version is the performance and speed (runs 2-5 times faster when compared to 2.1), faster browsing experience, support for Adobe Flash and Adobe Air, built-in support for tethering, Mobile hotspot support, automatic update for apps.

No word on when us Canadians will get 2.2. Hopefully it will be at the same time as everyone else but we’re still waiting for some devices to be upgraded to 2.1. However Android Central captured a good quote that might give hope for us to look forward to the second half of this year:

“if your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version. This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly anticipated phones like the Evo 4G, MyTouch slide and upcoming models. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can’t be more specific yet.”
