Is RIM looking to purchase mobile ad network Millennial Media?

Recently Google snatched up mobile ad network AdMob for $750 million, then Apple purchased Quatrro Wireless for $250 million, heck even Opera Software (makers of mobile browser Opera Mini) got an ad network of their own when they took over AdMarvel. So it seems that part of the future of mobile devices is getting in on mobile advertising.

According to the WSJ our homegrown Waterloo-based Research In Motion is also looking to get in on this mobile advertising action. They state that RIM has had conversations over the past few months to purchase Baltimore-based mobile ad network Millennial Media… however these talks have since broken down over the amount of coin Millennial is asking, apparently between $400 million to $500 million. You might recognize Millennial Media as they are in the list of approved vendors in RIM’s “BlackBerry Advertising Service” (this allows developers to include advertising in their apps).

Both RIM and Millennia are not commenting on this rumour. In a recent interview Millennial CEO Paul Palmieri said “We are on the path of being an independent company” and would rather make a public offering of shares than be acquired.

What do you think of RIM buying a mobile ad network? Will this help their future or do think RIM should work on what they do best, which is developing great Smartphones.
