A new report is out from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) called “The World in 2010” reveals some staggering global mobile numbers:
– There will be an estimated 5.3 billion mobile cellular subscriptions worldwide by the end of 2010
– Of the 5.3 billion mobile cellular subscriptions, 940 million subscriptions to 3G services.
– 90% of the global population have access to mobile networks (80% of the population living in rural areas)
– In 2009-2010 growth in mobile subscriptions has slowed down in developed countries to only 1.6%.
– Total number of SMS sent globally tripled since 2007 to an estimated 6.1 trillion in 2010 (192,192 text messages are sent every second)
To put a Canadian spin on these numbers. We have approximately 23 million mobile subscribers which means that Canada accounts for 0.43% of the global subscriptions. In addition, when it comes to text messaging, the CWTA recently stated that Canadians send 154 million per day and have 25.7 billion over a 6-month period. So to make it easy let’s say on a yearly basis Canadians send 52 billion text messages a year…. which means of the global 6.1 trillion texts Canadians account for about 0.85% of the global text messages.
