Confirmed: Public Mobile launching data January 2011

There was a MobileMonday event in Toronto tonight – on stage was CEO of Public Mobile Alek Krstajic and Chairman of Wind Mobile Anthony Lacavera. There was a number of topics that came to the forefront from how the incumbents are still not tower sharing (WIND currently has built approximately 1,000 towers and Public has 300), how the Competition Bureau made the right decision by going to court over the false advertising claims that Chatr Wireless has “fewer dropped calls that any of the new entrants”… and predictions of the coming year completed the evening with 2011 being a year of wireless consolidations. In addition, if you listened closely you might have heard a few confirmations of a what else we can expect next year:

As for Wind, Lacavera again stated that more Android handsets is coming. Krstajic confirmed something we’ve been saying since the middle of August – data will in fact be coming to Public Mobile. Krstajic stated in January they will be unveiling their Unlimited data offering. No word on what device they will launch with but it’ll be a natural progression for the low-cost carrier.

With Public entering the data market I bet we’ll see Chatr come out with their data offering incredibly soon (potentially a BlackBerry device in January). But really, one has to wonder once Public launches data, Chatr will be the only remaining wireless player not in the data game… and smartphones/data are only becoming more popular with Canadians.
