Edmonton Transit launching pilot to track buses via iPhone

A Edmonton Transit pilot project has been approved by city council that will see 50 buses outfitted with GPS technology that allows people to check the exact location of a specific bus from their iPhone. The project will start September 2012 and will cost $3.4-million. If it’s successful a complete roll-out to all of the Edmonton Transit buses will be considered. In addition to tracking the buses locations, Edmonton Transit manager Charlie Stolte stated the “program also includes automated stop announcements, ordered installed in other provinces to help disabled passengers, vehicle monitoring to detect mechanical problems and computer-aided service dispatch.”
