Telus offers up free calling to Japan

TELUS is stepping up to the plate again by giving a helping hand to those in need over in Japan. On Friday they announced they’ll donate $100,000 to help relief efforts and will also match what their employees raise. Going one step further today they have decided to make all voice calls and text messages free to Japan for TELUS subscribers.

Spokesperson Shawn Hall stated that “We’re doing what we can. This touches Telus in a very personal way; we’ve got team members with ties to Japan as well as customers with strong ties to Japan and we want to do what we can for them.”

Update: TELUS is only crediting free calls to Japan, not free texts. The original story on Canada.com is incorrect and TELUS’ Shawn Hall reached out to us and stated the following:

TELUS is making all consumer calls to Japan free through the end of the month, wireless and wireline. A number of our team members and customers have deep ties to Japan, and we want to support them in any way that we can. We are also looking at whether we can offer free text messages as well, but that proved technically impossible in such a short time frame over the weekend.
