zerofone iPhone app gets updated, helps reduce long distance and roaming charges

zerofone is one of those apps that I didn’t pay much attention to when it was released a few months ago. It’s a Toronto-based company and the app is free and is available for the iPhone (and iPod touch and iPad). zerofone is a mobile VoIP app and the goal is to help you reduce your long distance and roaming charges by going around your cell provider and make calls using the internet over 3G or WiFi without using your own minutes.

When you sign up they give you 10 minutes of free calling to test out the app. I called my brother in the U.K. The app integrates your current contact list and lets you know how many remaining minutes you have. The couple of calls I made were clear and without any delays. Included features are the ability to do 3-way call conferencing; call hold; second call and call swap; caller ID; call history/contact management and favourites quick calling page.

As for price points after the 10 minutes are up you can purchase a calling package (either monthly or one-time) that range from $4.99 to $9.99 for North American calls and International from $7.99 to $19.99. You don’t want to end up like those other people and get a bill for $30k… so for those who roam, zerofone has travel packages with 600 minutes of North American calling for $10 and 500 minutes of international calling for $15.
