Samsung, Apple poised to surpass Nokia as largest Smartphone manufacturer

Nokia is the world’s largest cell phone maker and they are barely holding on as the leader in smartphone sales. According to an analyst from Japanese firm Nomura it’s Samsung that going reign supreme and take over the top position. In addition, Nokia will actually fall to 3rd place and Apple will take over second.

“Nokia looks set to relinquish its smartphone crown to Samsung and Apple. Further emphasizing the shift in power to Asia is our forecast for HTC to almost match Nokia during 2012”. Nokia has held 1st place since 2006 and since Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android platform have come on the market Nokia has slowly declined. With the new iPhone expected to be released, coupled with the upcoming North American release of the Galaxy S II analysts are projecting Samsung to takeover by this quarter (Q3).

Gartner Research analyst Carolina Milanesi echoed the statement today and noted that “If Nokia’s new phones are not well received in the third quarter and with the Galaxy S2 ramping up, Samsung might overtake them and become the smartphone leader in Q3”.
