Update: Rogers launching LTE Samsung Galaxy S II September 28th… not so fast, still “coming soon”

Rogers loves being first in Canada to offer new wireless services, something they are not shy about and have boldly declared many times over the years. Recently they were first to announce and launch an LTE (Long Term Evolution) network in Canada, Ottawa was the inaugural city and Toronto will follow on September 28th.

Clearly not happy with the news that Bell is went live with their LTE network in Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph today… so they have pegged September 28th, 2-weeks from today, as a very important day. The reason is because this is when Rogers will claim as the first carrier in Canada to release an LTE-enabled smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy SII. No word on price points but Rogers did confirm on Twitter that “the device will be available throughout Canada as of September 28”.

We posted yesterday that this Android 2.3 Gingerbread powered device received a bump in specs, now sporting a dual core 1.5GHz processor. Other specs have it with a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen display (480×800), 1GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, 8 megapixel camera that shoots HD videos, 2 megapixel front facing camera and Wi-Fi.

Update: Whoops, the LTE hype in Canada was just a bit eager today. Apparently the Rogers launch of the LTE GSII is now not happening on the 28th, we heard from Rogers that the Twitter message was an error and that “a launch date for the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE has not yet been announced. Existing Rogers customers can reserve the device through the Rogers Reservation System which can be accessed through My Rogers.” In addition, on Twitter they noted that “I misunderstood the info I had because our LTE launch in Toronto is confirmed to the 28th but for the device, no confirmed date”… so now we wait, most likely until the Fall as they originally announced a couple weeks back.

We’ll have more info soon… who’s going to be buying?

(Thanks Jon!)
