Sony Ericsson has “shipped 22 million Xperia smartphones to date”

Sony Ericsson has slowly, very slowly, been rebuilding their famed past. After several money losing quarters they announced their Q3 results and have reported much of the same, all thanks to their Android Xperia lineup. According to Bert Nordberg, President and CEO of Sony Ericsson, he stated that Xperia smartphone now makes up for over 80% of their total sales. In addition, the entire Xperia smartphone family – dating all the way back to the original Xperia X1 – has amassed total shipments of 22 million. Probably the most notable quote in their announcement today was their 2012 focus, deciding to leave the entry level feature phones behind to completely “invest in the smartphone market, shifting the entire portfolio to smartphones during 2012”.

Highlighted Q3 results were: 9.5 million devices were shipped, average device selling price €166 (up 8%), sales for the quarter were approximately €1.6 billion, slightly down from last year – which they state was “due to inventory-related adjustments and product and geographic mix”. In addition, SE stated that their Android smartphone market share in Q3 hit 12%… this is far away from their “ambition to become the global number one handset provider on the Android platform”.

There were no details or hints at the recent rumour of Sony ending the joint venture and taking complete control of the brand.
