One in four Starbucks payments are from a mobile device

When Starbucks updated its iPhone app in November to allow Canadians to pay for food and drinks with their phone, it was merely the next step in a mobile payment plan that is seeing high dividends. According the company, 6 million mobile payments were made in North America since the system was launched in January. Based on the 26 million total, that is just less than one in four payments made with a mobile phone.

Though in Canada mobile payments are currently limited to iPhone, Starbucks promises that the Android app will be updated soon as well. Payments are made by showing a barcode unique to the person’s Starbucks card, which can then be scanned by a POS terminal in the store. The app can also reload and transfer balances.

Have you used the iPhone app to pay for a Starbucks drink? How was your experience? Let us know in the comments.
