Untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S next week? Not so fast…

This isn’t great news. Apparently pod2g, the gentleman who brought us the untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1 for the iPhone 4 and iPad 1, and who promised a similar crack for the newer-generation devices, has hit a snag in the process.

From a blog post earlier today, he reminds us how difficult this job can be: “The exploit I used to inject the untethering files to the 4S relies on having a developer account, and can’t be released publicly.”

So, instead of giving everyone the untethered jailbreak for A5-powered devices, only those 1% with developer accounts would have access to it — no good for the 99%.

He claims to be working feverishly to finish the job, but it may yet be slow going, at least for a few more months.
