Asus to release Transformer Prime bootloader unlocking tool in February

This is good news! According to a tweet from the official Asus account, the quad-core Transformer Prime will be getting a tool to unlock its bootloader in February, though when in the month is still a mystery. At the very worst it will be here in just over a month.

There was a veritable eruption last month over why Asus shipped a WiFi-only tablet with a locked bootloader, especially since its predecessor was a developer’s dream tab. According to the company, it was shipped that way to ensure DRM’d content such as movie downloads from the Android Marketplace would play without issue. Rooted devices will not play DRM content because there is a security risk in it being duplicated and pirated.

As such, Asus has chosen to release a bootloader unlocking tool with the understanding that it may lead to a void warranty of the device, and will disallow certain features of the tablet. That being said, we’re sure there are thousands of fans clamouring to get their sweaty paws all over such an application, and we’ll be sure to let you know when it does become available.
